New Exhibit: Dental Care All Year

The Sindecuse Museum has a new exhibit! It’s a small exhibit, but an exciting one: Dental Care All Year. Museum assistant and graduate student Meredith Counts planned and designed the exhibit after identifying some interesting trends in our archival collections.

Many people receive appointment reminders from their dentists. Some dentists, to make their reminders a little more eye-catching, employ themes of time and seasons. For example, a smiling alarm clock may announce you’re due to a dental checkup, or snowflakes may bracket an exhortation to “Keep that Glistening Smile!” 

Marketers of dental products utilize these themes, too. Some companies include a handy little calendar with their promotional items, while others relate their products to summer brightness and relaxation. While these techniques aren’t exclusive to dental advertisers, it’s interesting to see how they are applied to products most people consider fairly mundane.
